David was such a sweet guy, as I remember him.

I remember David from elementary school. He invited me to his house one day and it was soooo impressive, I was scared, frankly, his dad being a judge and all. Plus my parents were very safety conscious even back then. I remember calling home and, in Latvian, asking my mom to tell me I had to come home so I wouldn't be lying when I told him (I was such an idiot!).

I was shocked when I heard he'd committed suicide and wondered what his dad was going through.

He was totally sweet. And had a great sense of humor. One weekend he and I went with the speech team to Cleveland for a competition. We stayed an extra day with Mark Brown, who was in his first year at Case Western. My impression is that we never stopped making puns, and broke up in laughter over and over. It seems to me he also was a big hit as a concierge with an accent in "Hello Dolly." Anyway, he was a great friend. In the year after graduation he mailed me a book - "Be Here Now," a founding tome of New Ageism as it turns out; we'd both been interested in things metaphysical.
